Armistice Day Still Life.

November 11, 2018 14:54

Oil on canvas, 75cm x 60cm.

Remembrance Day poppies, with cornflowers for the French and for-get-me-nots for the Germans, Russians and Newfoundlanders. The postcard in the painting was from my great-grandfather, Joseph Noble, to his eight year old son Harry. Joseph was killed a few weeks later on his way to the Somme. The Japanese were our allies in the 1st World War, represented by the vase. The tankard was presented to my father who was served in the RAF for 35 years from 1946. The antique beer bottle was found in our attic at Hindley Wrae and the Edwardian clock is set at 11 o'clock, the end of the war.
